11 things you didn’t know about me

1. I’m from New Hampshire. Hudson, NH to be exact.  Population 13,000 when I was growing up.  Our high school didn’t have a football team (back then) but we had a farm and a top-rated agricultural and vocational program.

2. I’m an only child.

3. I backpacked through Europe for 6 weeks by myself when I was 23 years old. I loved it.  I went to London, Belgium, Amsterdam, Paris, Spain, Italy and Corfu.  I headed out by myself, met people along the way, and stayed in youth hostels.  But I did meet up with a friend who was living in Paris and traveled with her the last 2 weeks through Italy and Corfu.

4. My BA is in Women’s Studies. From UC Santa Cruz.

5. I met my husband at a job fair.  Yes, he was at a booth. Yes, I was looking for a job. ‘Nuff said. Continue reading

how we do money (with the kids)

This past weekend, I found myself in the unusual position of being at Toys R Us with 2 kids who had free reign to pick out whatever they wanted.  Well, whatever they wanted that they had money for.  But, as a sign of just how rare this is for us these days, my kids spent an hour looking at everything, and I mean Everything.  They were a little overwhelmed by all the stuff – but they really made sure they bought what they really wanted.

The money rules in our family are that we provide everything the kids need – clothes, food, shelter, etc.  Wants are for birthdays, Christmas and special occasions.  Continue reading

farewell, summer

Even though it’s not Labor Day yet, I’m sad to say that our summer is officially over. Actually, it was over two weeks ago when my daughter started school. I know, I know, August 15 is an insanely early start to a traditional school year (as opposed to year-round), but they get out super early – May 31st next year.

We had a great summer though.  As I wrote about earlier, this summer’s project was teaching the kids a few life lessons. We never did get around to teaching my son to ride a 2-wheel bike, but he ended up doing great in swim lessons. Continue reading
